On days when the weather is nice and I can ride my bike to work, I sometimes sit on a park bench in the Champ-de-Mars and eat and read before I go to class. Facing the École Militaire with the Eiffel Tower at my back, I opened my New Yorker to an article by Adam Gopnik titled “Trial of the Century,” and the first line read:
